U.K. regulator extends veterinary services investigation

The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced a six-month extension to its investigation into veterinary services for household pets. The decision aims to allow the regulator to "fully consider the responses we have received on our proposed remedies." Among the potential solutions discussed are a price comparison website for vets and a cap on prescription fees. The CMA is expected to release its final decision by February. CVS Group, a London-listed veterinary services provider, has expressed optimism that the extension will enhance the final remedy package. Meanwhile, the Mail on Sunday reports on the high cost of vet services in the U.K., noting that vet fees elsewhere in Europe are a quarter of what they are in the U.K. According to the CMA, spending on vet services rose by 10% annually between 2013 and 2020, then accelerated to 20% a year from 2020 to 2023.
